What is Freenet?

  • Freenet is free software which lets you anonymously share files, browse and publish "freesites" (web sites accessible only through Freenet) and chat on forums, without fear of censorship. Freenet is decentralised to make it less vulnerable to attack, and if used in "darknet" mode, where users only connect to their friends, is very difficult to detect.
  • Communications by Freenet nodes are encrypted (with a special version of Rijndael) and are routed through other nodes to make it extremely difficult to determine who is requesting the information and what its content is.

How to

  • For best performance, Freenet will run continually. Its recommended to shut down Freenet while playing computer games etc. On Windows you can do this from the system tray icon
  • It requires around 200MB of RAM and 10%-50% of one CPU core depending on how fast an internet connection you have, plus some disk access. Generally a 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM should be ok. It works with 1GiB datastore, but to increase security and speed I would recommend to start with 20GiB or more datastore. You should also have some free space left for temporary-files and your downloads (1GiB=1073741824Bytes).

Can i use it?

  • It runs (out of the box) on:

Windows, Mac OSX, Linux and other Unix

  • User-Interface Language can be set to: English, Espanol, Dansk, Nederlands, Deutsch, Suomi, Francais, Polski, Italiano, Norsk, Swenska, Chinese and others
  • You can access your freenet with any reasonably secure Internet Browser (Firefox, Chrome or Opera)
