ANts P2P is an anonymous filesharing network written in Java, and running on all modern operating sytems (Windows, Linux, MacOS). It is open source.

It was launched in 2004 and is written by a single Italian enthusiast—consequently it is most popular in Italy. Because it is an individual rather than collaborative project, development is relatively slow.

The program includes an IRC client so that users can communicate with each other.

Etymology

The name refers to the following:

  • AN = "anonymous network"
  • ants = the program creates and uses a serverless network, where "the files find their own way", like ants; such serverless networks are therefore also called "ants networks"
  • P2P = peer-to-peer, i. e. filesharing

The name means therefore: "anonymous, serverless network for filesharing".
